From the recording Burning Lullabies
Charlie gets back with Someone Special and as she falls asleep Charlie plays songs from his upcoming (at the time) album Americana And Whatever’s Left. This entire album takes place at this point in time as Charlie finishes singing AWL he starts singing what has been happening in the past few months. That leaves this song to be the narration for the first part of the album. This is part of the reason this is the title track of the album. The Burning Lullabies are these songs Charlie is singing as she is falling asleep. These songs are tales of their story that he believes is a futile mission to revive the relationship. He sings these songs as she falls asleep and these songs catch aflame as their life expectancy comes to an immediate close.
Lyrics
Well the ashes of your memory still echoes through my veins
And dances around the sky just like a Serengeti flame
It doesn't take a wise man to see they'll always stick around
Until the rivers all run dry and the mountains crashing down
Lay your hand on my pride
Take a deep breath and let go that weary sigh
Let your whispers speak of heaven and your big brown eyes of life
And we'll stay up all night
Singing Burning Lullabies
Well you look just like an angel laying by my side
But you left too many demons when you left too many times
Regrets and cigarettes being burned up in this bed
Along with the memories that we pretend are dead
Lay your hand on my pride
Take a deep breath and let go that weary sigh
Let your whispers speak of heaven and your big brown eyes of life
And we'll stay up all night
Singing Burning Lullabies
