From the recording Burning Lullabies
Vagabond’s Gospel is a prayer that Charlie is making while pulling up to “Someone Special”’s house praying that their plan to run away together works. In the previous songs on the album, Charlie and her get back together and then they plan to run away together, leaving town and her then boyfriend. Through the prayer, Charlie hints that everytime they get together he prays that it will work this time, but never does. He also is saying that if it doesn’t work this time he won’t ever pray for it again, meaning he will simply accept their fate of never working out or having to keep living their curse of being on/off again destined to live miserably only trying for happiness to have it escape them everytime they think they have it forever. As the song comes to a close he repeatedly sings “let’s get on the road” because he’s repeating the words to himself under his breath hoping that it will work.
Lyrics
Lord, if you can hear me, won't you let this moment last
I got too many memories that I had to give back
I got grass stains on my knees from praying for this to work
Maybe after all these years, everything I got is all I'm worth
Lord I'm the last to admit I could use a little help
Lord was she part of your plan for me, or was she planned by somebody else
And I'm tired of fighting this, endless battle with
The Good Lord who's only got my best interest at heart
And watching me fall apart
Here I am, praying for the last time
Because the years ain't been kind and the time ain't on my side
So Loretta, get you're things
Come on, girl, let's go
Because the Good Lord gave us a window until your boyfriend gets here
Let's get on the road
Let's get on the road
Let's get on the road
Let's get on the road
Let's get on the road
Let's get on the road
