From the recordings Burning Lullabies and When The Wheels Touch The Ground
The story of being on the road while on tour. While on the road, Charlie is exhausted from life on the road, despite being somewhat new to touring, this is very similar to the life that Charlie has always known - traveling continuously, and being away from home, while simultaneously looking for the home that you belong in. As Charlie continues this path he finds himself locked in more and more with the life that he did not necessarily go looking for but he found himself a part of, even if he looked for ways to avoid it. As we develop into the story we find that part of the tour was part of a plan to get back Charlie’s on and off girlfriend “Someone Special”. As Charlie finds he is stuck continually being away from home he is also stuck being away from anyone he gets close to. During all of this he attempts to put on a “brave face” and show the appearance of a young musician simply enjoying time on the road, but in fact a deeply torn young artist, torn between two worlds of who he wants to be, and the path of who he has chosen to be.
As Charlie comes closer to his ex-girlfriend he knows that he has the chance to get back with her but is scared of messing it up, but also scared that he will be successful, and that will only cause him more pain, anguish and to continue the loop that they have set themselves in. He stares down the road and gives in to going back home, and also back to the person he was before. Therefore, Charlie flies down the road doubting himself the whole way.
Lyrics
Maybe you could say I spend too much time on the road
Lost friends and family to the only life I know
The only life I know
The only life I know
Been on the road damn near six weeks
And I've got two more months to go
Next stop Johnson City
And then on to San Antonio
San Antone
San Antonio
Wake Me Up When The Wheels Touch The Ground
Living everyday next city bound
Midland's got blue skies and Marfa's got those lights
Wake Me Up When The Wheels Touch The Ground
Well I've been kicking myself
Oh Lord what should I do
Because I will be home in July
Extra long incase I run into you
So Wake Me Up When The Wheels Touch The Ground
Living everyday next city bound
Midland's got blue skies and Marfa's got those lights
Wake Me Up When The Wheels Touch The Ground
Wake Me Up When The Wheels Touch The Ground
(Touch the ground)
Living everyday next city bound
(City bound)
Midland's got blue skies and Marfa's got those lights
(Got those lights)
Wake Me Up When The Wheels Touch The Ground
